Tuna mayo avocado rice bowl is a Japanese-style rice bowl with a creamy flavorful tuna mix on top. It is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, and comes together in 10 minutes!

Tuna mayonnaise mix on top of Japanese rice

For those of you who have visited Japan before, have you ever tried ‘Tuna-Mayo Onigiri (rice balls)’ before? As you can tell from the name, they are rice balls stuffed with tuna mayonnaise mix inside.

While they are so cute and handy in the onigiri form, I often make this deconstructed version just to make things easy. Forget the onigiri shaping today, no technique is necessary here. You'll just need to combine the ingredients to make the tuna mix, and arrange it on top of rice.

I also like to add avocado chunks to the tuna mix to enhance the flavor and the texture. They are a great addition in terms of nutritional perspective as well.

Serving this tuna mix over a bowl of Japanese rice is my favorite style, but it also goes well with toasted bread. The recipe can be doubled (and tripled) to feed a bigger crowd.

    Ingredients for this recipe

    • Canned light tuna (in water) - or any type of tuna works.
    • Onion
    • Avocado oil mayonnaise - as a healthier option, I use avocado oil mayonnaise. Regular mayonnaise totally works as well!
    • Tamari soy sauce
    • Sesame oil
    • Avocado
    • Salt & pepper
    • Cooked Japanese rice

    Optional toppings:

    • Nori seaweed
    • Toasted white sesame
    • Chili threads

How to make tuna mayo avocado rice bowl

    1. Make the tuna mix. In a medium sized bowl, combine the tuna (see the note below), onion, mayonnaise, tamari, sesame oil together and mix well.

    2. Add in the avocado. Mix gently not to crush the avocado cubes.

    3. Serve. Spread nori over cooked rice, then arrange the tuna mix on top. Sprinkle some white sesame and chili threads if desired.

    Tips for making this recipe

Whether the tuna is in oil or water, get rid of the liquid as much as possible to avoid the mix getting watery. An easy way is to scoop out the tuna with a spoon leaving the liquid in the can instead of dumping the entire content into a mixing bowl (which I would do if not been told…).
